Landgoed Rhederoord has various vegetable gardens tended by local residents, part of the yield of which is used in the kitchens of the estate. In addition, Landgoed Rhederoord has made a 125 m2 piece of land available to gardeners Janny van Dijken and Sonja Heilen for ‘The Food Bank Garden’. Together with other volunteers, they provide the organic vegetables for the food packages that are issued via the distribution point of the Food Bank in Rheden.
One to two portions of fresh vegetables per person per week.
Every Friday morning, we package the vegetable harvest into portions of approximately 300 grams and deliver them to the distribution centre in Rheden, and in the event of an abundant harvest also to the distribution centre in Dieren. The regular food packages usually contain virtually no fresh vegetables. ‘The Food Bank Garden’ therefore clearly meets a need
Sonja: “We deliberately grow traditional Dutch vegetables that are expected to produce a good harvest in order to achieve the highest possible yield for the Food Bank. We try to keep the winter period, in which there is no harvest, as short as possible and maximise the use of the soil in order to produce as much as possible over as long a period as possible. At the moment we harvest from April to October and we work in the garden from February until November.”
